PFIT Overview

The Physical Fitness Inventory Test (PFIT) is a required component of the Illinois State Police Cadet Applicant Process. It is designed to measure the minimum physical abilities necessary to safely and effectively perform essential law enforcement duties.

Important: Applicants must meet or exceed the minimum standard in each event to successfully pass the Physical Fitness Inventory Test.

PFIT Events Explained

Sit & Reach Test

Measures flexibility of the lower back and upper leg area. Flexibility is important for performing law enforcement tasks requiring range of motion and may help reduce lower back injuries.

Score: Distance reached in inches.

One Minute Sit-Up Test

Measures muscular endurance of the abdominal muscles. Core strength is important for maintaining posture, reducing lower back problems, and performing physically demanding law enforcement duties.

Score: Number of correctly completed sit-ups in one minute.

Bench Press

Measures upper-body strength and force generation. Upper-body strength is essential for many law enforcement tasks requiring physical control and force application.

Score: Weight pressed divided by body weight.

1.5 Mile Run

Measures cardiovascular endurance and the body's ability to transport oxygen during physical activity. Endurance is critical for sustained law enforcement operations and overall fitness.

Score: Recorded in minutes and seconds.
